Royal Palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso, Royal palace in San Ildefonso, Spain
The Royal Palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso is a residence in Real Sitio de San Ildefonso that includes several halls, chambers, and state rooms decorated with tapestries, paintings, and furniture from the period. The complex extends across multiple building wings arranged around central courtyards and now serves as a museum.
Construction began in 1721 under Philip V, who chose this location as a summer residence inspired by his childhood in Versailles. The complex was expanded several times over the following decades and redesigned under later monarchs.
The Spanish monarch commissioned artists from across Europe to create interiors that combine French elegance with Italian elements. Visitors see this mix today in the frescoes, chandeliers, and furniture that reflect 18th-century taste.
The palace opens Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00 in winter and until 19:00 during summer months. Some rooms may close for state events, so checking availability before visiting is recommended.
The gardens contain 26 fountains with water systems that shoot water up to 42 meters (138 feet) high without mechanical assistance. This hydraulic mechanism relies solely on the natural slope of the surrounding mountains.
