Oropesa

Oropesa is a coastal municipality in Plana Alta with a landscape of sandy beaches and rocky coves along the Mediterranean shoreline. The settlement sits at an elevation where medieval fortress remains can still be seen overlooking the water below.

The castle of Oropesa was conquered in 1233 by King James I and became a key defense point for the coast. Later, during Philip II's rule, a new tower was added to strengthen protection against maritime threats.

The Torre del Rey fortress shaped how residents lived and built their settlements, as protection from sea raids was a constant concern for coastal communities. The tower's presence still influences how locals and visitors understand the coast's defensive heritage today.

The area is easily reached by car through the N-340 road and A7 motorway, while the railway station offers regular trains to major cities. Visitors should note that coastal areas can get crowded during summer months.

The municipality is home to the Museo del Naipe, which holds one of the world's largest private collections of playing cards spanning different regions and time periods. This unexpected museum offers insight into a craft and hobby that many visitors do not expect to find in a small coastal town.
