Zoo Aquarium de Madrid, Zoo and public aquarium in Casa de Campo, Madrid, Spain
Zoo Aquarium de Madrid is a zoo and public aquarium spread across the Casa de Campo recreational area in Madrid. The facility is organized into sections including a dolphinarium, an aviary, a petting zoo, and an aquarium with multiple saltwater tanks.
The original animal collection started in 1770 in Retiro Park before moving to Casa de Campo in 1972. This relocation allowed the facility to grow and develop into a much larger institution.
The facility is a gathering place where families and school groups spend time observing animals together and learning about different species. People walk through its sections at a leisurely pace, making it a common weekend destination for people in Madrid.
The grounds are walkable and you can move between the different sections on foot. Comfortable shoes and water are recommended since you will be walking for extended periods throughout the visit.
The zoo became known for housing giant pandas starting in 1978 when China gifted the first pair to Spain. This made it a special destination for visitors interested in seeing these rare animals up close.
