Colegio del Pilar, Catholic school in Recoletos, Madrid, Spain
The Colegio del Pilar is a Catholic educational center in the Recoletos neighborhood of Madrid, occupying a large plot between several streets. The main structure combines neogothic and modernist styles with interior courtyards, a chapel, and adjacent sports facilities.
The school opened in 1907 on Goya Street and relocated to its present site in 1921, where the main building was constructed. During the Spanish Civil War the premises temporarily functioned as a hospital before returning to educational use after the conflict ended.
The school takes its name from the Spanish sanctuary of Our Lady of the Pillar in Zaragoza, reflecting its religious foundation. Visitors walking through the corridors today can still see early 20th-century architectural details that shape the daily rhythm of students and teachers.
The grounds are accessible during school hours on weekdays, though visitors should arrange in advance to tour the interior spaces. The Recoletos location makes it easy to reach by public transport or on foot from the city center.
The institution received two official honors from Spanish authorities in its centenary year, including the Silver Cross from the Community of Madrid. A Gospel passage engraved on the main staircase has remained visible since the 1920s, placed there by the director of that period.
