Pedra Gentil, Megalithic tomb in Vallgorguina, Spain.
Pedra Gentil is a Neolithic dolmen in Vallgorguina, a small town inside the Montnegre i el Corredor natural park, in the coastal hills of Catalonia, Spain. The burial monument consists of several upright stone slabs holding a large flat capstone, set into a wooded hillside where it remains clearly visible from nearby paths.
The monument was built around 5,000 years ago during the Neolithic period, when farming communities in the region began burying their dead in large stone structures. Centuries later, in the 1800s, renewed interest in the site led to one of the first documented restorations of a megalithic monument in Catalonia.
The name Pedra Gentil means something like "the noble stone" or "the gentle stone" in Catalan, which hints at how local people have long regarded this structure with a kind of respect. Today visitors often arrive on foot along forest paths, and the setting gives the place a calm presence that feels set apart from everyday life.
The site is reached on foot via marked trails within the natural park, and the walk can take longer than expected depending on which entry point you choose. Sturdy footwear is recommended as the ground is uneven in places, and it is worth checking the weather before setting out since the area offers little shelter.
Although the dolmen has stood in the open for thousands of years, the arrangement of its stone slabs still allows visitors to clearly read the shape of the original burial chamber. This level of preservation is relatively rare in the region, where many similar structures have partially collapsed or been disturbed over time.
