Escunhau

Escunhau is a small mountain settlement in the Aran Valley with traditional stone houses clustered together along the slopes. The buildings feature the typical pitched roofs and compact layout common to Pyrenean villages.

This mountain community developed gradually over time in the Aran Valley as part of local settlement patterns. In 1970, it merged with neighboring settlements to form the modern administrative region of Vielha e Mijaran.

The buildings here display traditional mountain construction methods, with sturdy stone walls and steeply pitched roofs built to handle heavy snow and harsh conditions. This practical building style still shapes how the village looks today.

The settlement can be reached via the C-28 road, which stays open year-round and connects it to other villages in the Aran Valley. The pathways through the village are narrow and sometimes steep, so sturdy footwear helps when exploring.

Despite its small population, the village holds official status as a Cultural Asset of Catalonia, recognizing its importance as an example of traditional mountain settlement. This designation reflects how regional authorities value its architectural and cultural character.
