Retortillo Reservoir, body of water
Retortillo Reservoir is a large body of water in Seville Province surrounded by green fields and open land that stretches across more than 500 hectares. The concrete dam completed in 1970 stores water for irrigation, drinking supplies, and flood control while supporting outdoor activities like fishing and walking.
The dam project started in 1966 and was completed in 1970 to provide water storage for irrigation and household supplies. The surrounding region shows evidence of Bronze Age settlements, Roman villas near mining sites, and later medieval villages that shaped the area's development over thousands of years.
The reservoir area has served the local community for generations as a place for gathering and outdoor enjoyment. Today, visitors can experience how people use the water and surrounding landscape for recreation, bird watching, and connecting with the natural environment.
The area around the reservoir is open and accessible with simple paths leading to good viewing spots and picnic areas. Bring water and sun protection since the open landscape offers little shade, and be cautious near the water especially with children present.
The area contains caves with traces of Paleolithic hunters who left behind stone tools made from flint, revealing early human activity in the region thousands of years ago. These archaeological sites scattered across the landscape tell stories of the first people who worked and hunted in this area.
