Old Orphanage of Vitoria

The Old Orphanage is a building in Vitoria featuring a striking facade framed by Tuscan and Ionic columns, crowned with a sculptural relief representing Charity. Inside, a rectangular chapel with three sections extends beneath a vaulted ceiling decorated with lunettes.

The orphanage was established in 1778 by royal decree under Charles III and occupied the former San Prudencio College building dating from 1653. This founding reflected 18th-century reforms aimed at providing education and care for abandoned children.

The building served as a place where orphaned children learned practical skills to become self-sufficient members of society. The values of care and vocational training remain central to how locals view this institution.

The building is situated on San Vicente de Paul Street and is easily accessible on foot. The chapel interior may require some time to explore, and it is advisable to check in advance which areas are open to visitors.

The chapel houses the tomb of Bishop Martin de Salvatierra, depicted in a praying pose before an altar and crucifix. This artistic representation is a notable feature that reflects the spiritual character of the place.
