Museo Histórico de las Merindades

The Merindades Historical Museum is housed in a Gothic fortress with two square towers and a central building connecting them. The castle spreads across four floors with several exhibition halls that display objects from ancient times through the early modern period.

Construction of the fortress began in 1380 under the Velasco family, who held the position of High Constables of Castile for centuries. The building reflects the military power and political influence that this family exercised across northern Spain.

The museum displays archaeological objects from different periods that show how people lived in this region over many centuries. Visitors can see how daily life and crafts changed from prehistoric times through the early modern era.

The museum is easily reached on foot from the town center and is located in a distinctive building that is hard to miss. Visitors should plan to spend several hours exploring all four floors and the various exhibitions.

From the rooftop terrace on the fourth floor, visitors can view the surrounding landscape while studying a detailed model of the regional governance structure. This model shows how the Velasco family's rule was actually organized in practice.
