Monastery of Nuestra Señora de los Huertos, Sigüenza, Gothic monastery in Sigüenza, Spain.
Nuestra Señora de los Huertos is a late Gothic monastery in Sigüenza, located near Parque de la Alameda and characterized by buttresses with gargoyles and pinnacles typical of its architectural period. Inside, a single nave features ribbed vaults and a decorated metal grille that divides the presbytery from the rest of the space.
Construction of the monastery began in 1512 on the site of an earlier Visigothic church under Dean Clemente López de Frías. The religious community that eventually occupied the building brought with them traditions that shaped its use and meaning over following centuries.
The monastery is home to a community of Poor Clare nuns who engage in hand-embroidering liturgical vestments and traditional baking as part of their daily life. Visitors can observe their craftsmanship through the work that fills their days here.
Visiting is flexible but it is wise to check in advance about access times, as this remains an active religious community. Respectful behavior is important when inside, and visitors should be mindful that photography and other activities may be restricted in certain areas.
The main chapel holds a Renaissance altarpiece painted directly onto the wall, showing five scenes framed within intricate carved stonework. This artwork is permanently fixed to the walls and cannot be moved or removed from the space.
