Claustre del Mas del Vent de Palamós, Romanesque cloister at Mas del Vent estate in Palamós, Spain.
The Claustre del Mas del Vent is a Romanesque cloister with ten arches supported by double columns on each of its four galleries. Each gallery extends roughly 24 meters in length, surrounding a central courtyard.
The cloister was originally built in Madrid's Ciudad Lineal district and relocated to Palamós in 1959 when Hans Engelhorn purchased the estate. This relocation transformed it into an unexpected architectural element within the larger property.
The carved capitals feature human figures, plants, and animals alongside mythological beings, but notably lack any religious imagery.
Guided tours of this cloister have been available since 2016 through arrangements with Palamós Council, allowing visitors to see the structure properly. Check locally for current visiting conditions and tour availability before planning your visit.
The cloister is wrapped around a swimming pool in the courtyard, an unusual pairing of medieval architecture with modern leisure. This mixing of historical design and contemporary use creates a distinctive setting within the estate.
