Castell de Mataplana, Medieval castle in Gombrèn, Spain
Castell de Mataplana is a medieval castle in the mountain landscape of Gombrèn at about 1160 meters elevation. The complex includes several structures, with a rectangular tower on the western side, residential buildings, and the Romanesque chapel of Sant Joan de Mataplana.
The structure dates to the 12th century but was built over an earlier fortification from the early Romanesque period. Archaeological excavations beginning in 1986 revealed these layers and the site's development over time.
The site is connected to Count Arnau, a key figure in Catalan folklore whose stories remain part of local identity and regional heritage. This link makes it a meaningful place for understanding the culture of the mountain communities in the area.
The site is an archaeological area where structures are partially exposed or in ruins, so wear suitable footwear for walking on uneven ground. Plan time for a leisurely walk through the complex to explore its different areas and take in the mountain views.
Among the ruins stands a well-preserved blacksmith's house that offers rare insights into medieval craftsmanship and daily work. This building is one of ten single-story dwellings that document life within the castle settlement.
