Castillo de Montizón

Castillo de Montizón is a medieval fortress in Villamanrique that rises above the right bank of the Guadalén River on a hilltop. The complex includes several sections connected by defensive walls, courtyards, and a distinctive central tower that commands views of the surrounding land.

The fortress was founded in the 13th century under Don Pelayo Correa of the Santiago military order as a strategic point to control trade routes between Jaén and Montiel. It remained an important defensive position throughout the medieval period as these regions maintained their political significance.

The name comes from the hilltop where it stands, and the fortress served as a residence for the Manrique family who held influence throughout the region. For them, it was both a stronghold and the center of their local authority.

Access to the site must be arranged in advance through Villamanrique Town Hall since the fortress is not freely open to the public. Note that it is typically closed during September, so plan your visit for other months.

The Torre del Homenaje stands on solid rock formations rising directly from the riverbank, giving the tower an extraordinarily strong foundation. This natural rock base was a key reason the builders chose this exact location for the fortress.
