Castell de Montornès

Castell de Montornès is a medieval fortification perched on a hilltop between two municipalities, retaining a distinctive circular tower and fragmented walls from its defensive layout. From this vantage point, visitors can see views across the surrounding countryside and observe how the stone construction was built directly into the natural rock.

First mentioned in a 1108 document, the castle changed hands between different owners during the medieval period. The fortification underwent modifications across several centuries to adapt to changing military and defensive needs.

The castle holds Cultural Asset of National Interest status and represents medieval Catalan defensive architecture through its preserved structural elements.

The hilltop location requires walking uphill from nearby villages, so comfortable footwear is advisable for exploring the site. The open position offers little shelter from sun or wind, making visits more pleasant during cooler parts of the day.

A documented earthquake in 1448 caused major damage to the original fortifications, triggering reconstruction of weakened sections. The visible cracks and repairs in the stonework today still reflect the impact of this distant natural event.
