Montsoriu Castle, Medieval castle in Arbúcies and Sant Feliu de Buixalleu, Spain.
Montsoriu is a castle in the Montseny Mountains sitting at roughly 632 meters elevation, built by the Viscounts of Cabrera-Girona. The site contains three walled enclosures with halls, chapels, stairs, and cisterns that together show how people lived and defended this position in medieval times.
The stronghold appears in records from the late 10th century and became a key seat of regional power. It underwent several expansions and rebuilding phases over the centuries until it eventually lost its military value and fell into decline.
The name derives from Latin 'mons soricum', suggesting an ancient temple once stood at the summit. Visitors can still explore the foundations, revealing how this location held both religious and military importance across centuries.
Access is through a walking path of about 3 kilometers from the public parking area, which is well marked and takes roughly 90 minutes. It is wise to wear comfortable shoes and bring water and sun protection in warm weather, as the path is open with little shade.
The site museum preserves over 150 medieval artifacts including weapons, gaming pieces, glassware, and tableware found during excavations. These discoveries allow visitors a direct look at everyday life of past inhabitants and show what people owned and how they lived during that time.
