Pont Vell de Manresa, Gothic bridge in Manresa, Spain.

Description

Pont Vell de Manresa is a medieval stone bridge that crosses the Cardener River using eight arches and reaches a maximum height of about 25 meters. The structure spans approximately 113 meters and displays typical Gothic design features with its distinctive arch system that distributes weight evenly across the river.

History

The bridge originated in the 14th century as a key crossing over the Cardener River. After sustaining significant damage during the Spanish Civil War, it underwent major restoration between 1960 and 1962, which preserved its original character while making it safe for continued use.

Culture

The bridge has been central to Manresa's identity for centuries, serving as the main crossing point that shaped how the city grew on both sides of the river. Walking across it today, you notice how locals treat it as a natural part of their daily route, connecting neighborhoods with a sense of continuity.

Practical

The crossing is easily walkable and provides direct access between the southwestern edge of Manresa and the city center. The broad, stable structure allows easy passage for pedestrians, cyclists, and light vehicles without restriction.

Did you know?

The structure includes two discharge openings on each side of its main span that allow water to flow around the bridge during floods and reduce pressure on the stonework. These openings follow ancient Roman engineering ideas that still work effectively today.
