Cau del Duc

The cave extends 20 meters deep into the mountainside with a ceiling height of 6 meters, offering views across the Empordà region at 250 meters elevation.

Archaeological evidence indicates human occupation by Homo Heidelbergensis approximately 300,000 years ago, marking one of the earliest settlements in Catalonia.

The cave contains remains of hunting activities, including tools and animal bones from rabbits, goats, deer, horses, chamois, and bears, revealing ancient subsistence patterns.

Access requires following the road toward Estartit from Torroella de Montgrí and locating the sign for Montgrí Castle, though trail markers are limited.

The cave provided shelter from northern winds and access to natural resources, with a different landscape 300,000 years ago featuring abundant vegetation near the Ter River delta.
