Ermita de Santa Caterina

The Ermita de Santa Caterina is a small chapel located on a hill overlooking Torroella de Montgrí and visible from great distances. The building contains a worship space along with residential rooms and storage areas, plus underground chambers that once served practical purposes.

Three monks from Montserrat monastery established this chapel in 1392 during a period of religious turmoil within the Catholic Church. The settlement marked the beginning of a religious community at this location that persisted across centuries.

The place is named after Saint Catherine, whose veneration remains alive in the local community today. People from Torroella visit regularly to pay their respects to the saint and seek her protection and blessings.

You can reach the chapel on foot via a walking path that takes about 45 minutes from Torroella, or drive there using the old road toward Bellcaire d'Empordà. It is wise to wear proper footwear and bring enough water, especially during warm weather.

Inside the chapel are decorative tiles from Manises workshops that depict scenes from the life of Saint Catherine. These valuable pieces were left as a gift by a wealthy Torroella family and represent a rare example of artisan craftsmanship in this setting.
