Congosto de Ventamillo, Natural protected area in Seira and El Run, Spain.
Congosto de Ventamillo is a protected natural site in the Pyrenees characterized by dramatic vertical limestone cliffs that run for several kilometers along the Ésera river. The narrow passages and rocky terrain create a striking landscape for hikers and climbers exploring the area.
The gorge was carved by glacial meltwater and the Ésera river over thousands of years, gradually eroding the limestone and creating the current landscape. The geological formations visible today result from this long process of water-driven erosion through soft rock layers.
Local inhabitants of Seira and El Run maintain traditional Aragonese customs while adapting to modern conservation practices in the protected area.
Access to the gorge is on foot via trails that begin from nearby villages, with pathways varying in difficulty based on your chosen route. Proper footwear and preparation are essential since terrain can be steep, rocky, and require careful footing in places.
An old hiking trail links the two villages and passes through elevations exceeding 1000 meters, offering unusual vantage points. Along this path, walkers encounter views of the Cotiella massif, a neighboring mountain formation with its own distinctive geology.
