Doll Museum of Castell d'Aro, Museu em Castell d'Aro, Espanha
The Doll Museum of Castell d'Aro is a museum housing over 800 dolls made from various materials including ceramic, wood, papier-mache, fabric, ivory, and coconut shell. The collection spans two floors, with the ground floor organized by country and the upper floor displaying dolls from the 19th century to the present day.
The museum opened in 1997 based on a donation from Josefina Teixidor, who gave 400 dolls after collecting them for over 30 years. Additional dolls were added over time from private collectors and embassies, enriching the overall collection.
The museum displays dolls from many countries dressed in traditional clothing from different periods and places around the world. These pieces show how childhood and play have been valued across various cultures and how styles changed over time.
Admission is free and the museum is part of a guided tour through Castell d'Aro's historic center, making it easy to combine the visit with other sights in town. The location is near the beach and other historical sites, so a walk through the narrow streets of the surrounding area is worthwhile.
The museum houses a special collection of 254 handcrafted crocheted dolls made by Isabel Muntada and given as gifts by her family. This exceptional collection showcases the skill and care that went into one person's dedicated handicraft.
