Mosaic del Pla de l'Os, Circular mosaic at La Rambla, Barcelona, Spain
Mosaic del Pla de l'Os is a circular work of art located on La Rambla, composed of approximately 6000 quadrangular tiles arranged in geometric patterns. The tiles display colors including black, white, red, blue, and yellow, creating a visual pathway along the pedestrian street.
This work was created in 1976 through a collaboration between artist Joan Miró and ceramicist Joan Gardy-Artigas as one of three artistic commissions welcoming visitors to Barcelona. The partnership represented a significant effort to integrate art into the city's most-visited public space.
The mosaic represents Barcelona's commitment to public art through its placement in the Gothic Quarter, where thousands of pedestrians walk across it daily.
The mosaic sits within the central walkway of La Rambla near the La Boqueria market in the historic Ciutat Vella neighborhood. You can explore it easily while walking through the street, and it remains accessible at any time of day.
The mosaic is made using terrazzo, a material composed of crushed colored glass embedded in white cement mortar. Each tile features small raised square elements on its surface, giving the work a three-dimensional quality when viewed up close.
