Taller d'Arquitectura - Xemeneia Fàbrica Sanson, Former cement factory complex in Sant Just Desvern, Spain.
The Taller d'Arquitectura - Xemeneia Fàbrica Sanson is a former cement complex in Sant Just Desvern made up of massive concrete silos and other industrial buildings. The structure features vertical window openings that cut through the original storage containers and flood the interior with light.
The Sanson cement factory began producing cement in 1921 and was known for its 92-meter chimney, one of the region's most recognizable industrial landmarks. After closing in 1968, architect Ricard Bofill purchased the site and converted it into an architecture studio between 1973 and 1975.
The place bears the name of the former Sanson cement factory, and today architects and designers use the site as a working space. The raw concrete silos and vegetation surrounding them show how an old industrial site became a living creative hub.
The site is today an active architecture and design office, so visits are possible but require prior appointment or permission. A tour allows you to see both the original industrial structures and the modern spaces created by Bofill up close.
The former factory's 92-meter chimney was once Europe's tallest industrial structure of its kind and still stands as a silent monument on the grounds. This height made the factory visible from far away and shaped the landscape of the region for many decades.
