Les quatre barres de la senyera catalana, Public art sculpture in La Barceloneta, Spain.
Les quatre barres de la senyera catalana is an art installation on the waterfront consisting of four tall marble columns stretching 50 meters along the shore. The white Carrara marble blocks are arranged orthogonally to form a clean, geometric structure rising from the promenade.
The work was completed in 2009 by Ricardo Bofill Leví and interprets the centuries-old Catalan flag design in a modern way. This brought medieval heritage into the city's contemporary art landscape.
The four red stripes come from medieval Aragonese royal symbols and are now central to Catalan identity. You see these colors throughout the city and quickly understand how deeply they matter to local people.
The installation stands directly on the waterfront promenade of La Barceloneta within walking distance of Hotel W Barcelona. It is easy to reach and fits naturally into walks along the water.
Each of the four columns features a hidden helical twist that creates subtle diagonal movement while their bases and tops remain perfectly square. This rotational detail only becomes obvious when you look closely.
