Ras Dashen, Highest mountain peak in Semien Mountains, Ethiopia

The basalt peak of Ras Dashen reaches an elevation of 4,533 meters within the eastern section of the Simien Mountains National Park.

French officers Ferret and Galinier completed the first documented European ascent of Ras Dashen in 1841, discovering remnants of an ancient fort near the summit.

The mountain's name derives from the Amharic 'Ras Dejen', referring to a military commander who led troops before the Ethiopian Emperor.

Climbers begin their ascent from Ambiko base camp, requiring approximately seven hours to reach the summit and five hours to descend along established trails.

The mountain experiences extreme temperature variations, with nighttime snow often melting by midday during warm seasons while winter accumulations persist longer.
