Sheka

Sheka is a biosphere reserve in southwestern Ethiopia that encompasses vast forests with diverse plants and animals found only in this region. The reserve contains different types of forest and habitats that blend together to create a rich natural landscape.

The Sheka Kingdom developed a forest management system that protected the forest over many generations. These traditional leadership practices formed the foundation for the region to become the biosphere reserve it is today.

The Shekacho people maintain a deep connection to the forest through religious ceremonies and traditional practices that take place in sacred areas. These customs continue to shape how the community relates to and uses the land today.

Visitors need permission from local authorities to enter certain forest areas, particularly those used for traditional activities. It helps to allow time for preparation and check with local guides or community representatives beforehand.

Local communities have collected honey from the forest for generations using methods passed down through families. This practice connects economic activities with traditional knowledge and remains visible in daily forest use.
