Nummela Sanatorium, Psychiatric hospital in Röykkä, Finland.
Nummela Sanatorium is a three-story medical building in Röykkä designed in Art Nouveau style with large windows and symmetrical architectural details. The proportioned facade and numerous windows characterize the overall appearance of the structure.
Architect Magnus Schjerfbeck designed the building in 1903 as a tuberculosis treatment center following the most advanced healing concepts of that era. The facility later transformed into a psychiatric hospital after 1932 and closed in 1989.
The building reflects early 20th-century medical thinking that sought healing through light and fresh air. These design principles remain visible in the large windows and open spatial arrangement throughout the structure.
The building is situated near regional road 132 and national road 25 in Nurmijärvi municipality and is accessible through these major routes. The site is protected as a heritage monument and is not open to the public for regular visits.
The building was purchased in 2022 by Röykkä Invest Oy with plans to transform it into a modern hotel complex, giving the historic structure a new purpose. This planned conversion shows how former medical buildings can be adapted for contemporary use while preserving their architectural character.
