Sörnäinen Harbour is a seaport on Helsinki's eastern shore with multiple berths for passenger and cargo vessels. The waterfront spans a substantial area and serves as a key maritime junction on the city's eastern side.
The harbor was founded in 1863 to support Finland's timber export trade, and an oil terminal was added in 1889. These facilities shaped the region's economic story for nearly two centuries.
The port transformation from industrial operations to residential development reflects Helsinki's evolution from maritime commerce to urban living spaces.
The harbor connects directly to Helsinki's public transportation network through nearby tram lines. Visitors can reach the area easily on foot or by public transit from the city center.
After 145 years of continuous maritime operations, the harbor shifted its main functions to a newer facility in 2008. Today it focuses on power generation activities and sees far fewer vessels than it did during its peak years.
