Hakaniemen silta, Road bridge in Kallio, Helsinki, Finland
Hakaniemen silta is a concrete and steel road bridge in Helsinki that links the Kallio district to Hakaniemi Square and the surrounding neighborhoods. It spans the Eläintarhanlahti bay and carries both vehicle traffic and pedestrians on separate sections.
The bridge opened in October 1961, replacing an older crossing that could no longer handle the city's growing traffic. Its construction came during a period when Helsinki was expanding its road network across the water.
The bridge leads directly to Hakaniemi Market Square, where food stalls and small shops draw locals in for everyday shopping. Crossing it puts you right at the heart of working-class Kallio.
The bridge is open at all times and has clearly marked areas for pedestrians and vehicles. Metro and tram stops are found at both ends, making it easy to continue exploring the city from here.
The waterway below the bridge is used by ferries heading toward the archipelago, so you can sometimes watch them pass from the pedestrian lane. This mix of urban road traffic above and active sea routes below is unusual for a city bridge.
