Tikkurilankoski, Rapids on Keravanjoki River in Vantaa, Finland.
Tikkurilankoski is a stretch of rapids on the Keravanjoki River extending roughly 400 meters with natural water formations and rocky cascades. The current flows swiftly over uneven terrain, creating whitewater patterns that define the site's appearance.
A concrete dam built between 1912 and 1913 controlled the rapids to power a linseed oil factory until its removal in 2019. This restoration allowed the river system to return to its natural state and function.
The rapids now serve as a natural spawning ground where fish return each season to reproduce in the flowing water. Visitors can watch this seasonal cycle and witness how the river has reclaimed its ecological role.
The rapids are easily accessible from Kuninkaalantie and offer open banks for viewing the water. Visitors should be aware that the banks can be wet and slippery, especially near the fast-flowing sections.
After dam removal, trout populations returned to spawn in the rapids and have been observed up to 200 meters upstream from the former barrier. This comeback demonstrates how quickly nature can recover when obstacles are removed.
