Stora Enson pääkonttori, Corporate headquarters in Katajanokka, Finland.
Stora Enson pääkonttori is a modern corporate headquarters with six stories and white marble cladding located in the Katajanokka district. The recessed roof terrace overlooks Helsinki harbor and the market square below.
Finnish architect Alvar Aalto designed this modernist structure in 1961, and it opened as headquarters for the Enso-Gutzeit company in 1962. The building reflects the postwar emphasis on form and function that shaped European architecture at the time.
Local residents call the building the 'Sugar Cube' because of its cube-like shape and bright white surface standing next to the Presidential Palace.
The interior features movable walls across 12,000 square meters of office space, allowing flexible workspace arrangements. Its waterfront location makes the building easy to locate on foot and navigate to from nearby attractions.
The building has held protected status since 2010, preserving both its exterior and certain interior spaces like the main lobby and executive boardroom. This legal protection makes it an example of how postwar modernism is safeguarded in Finland today.
