Valtiontalo, Civil guard house in Jyväskylä, Finland.
Valtiontalo is a government building in Jyväskylä designed by architect Alvar Aalto in the late 1920s. The structure spans multiple floors with clean geometric lines and functional spaces arranged throughout.
The building was originally constructed as a civil guard headquarters and was purchased by the Finnish state in 1934. After this acquisition, it served various government departments and eventually received protected status.
The building displays a shift from Nordic Classicism toward Functionalism in how its spaces are arranged and decorated. This change becomes visible when you walk through the rooms and notice the clean lines and modern features throughout.
The building underwent renovations completed in 2020 and now combines historical structure with modern facilities while maintaining its protected status. It is located near Kirkkopuisto and remains easily accessible to visitors.
Aalto was just 28 years old when he designed this project after placing second in a design competition. Despite this, his design was selected for construction instead of the winner's proposal.
