Lahden Säästöhuipun sortuminen, Building collapse site in Lahti, Finland.

The Säästöhuippu was a nine-story residential building on Mustankallionmäki hill at Juustilankatu street that collapsed completely during construction. The structure failed while still under development, leaving only concrete rubble at the site.

The building collapsed on April 12, 1963, around 10 PM on Good Friday, caused by frozen moisture that weakened the concrete structure. The incident occurred on a holiday when most workers had already left the construction site.

The collapse shifted public awareness toward construction safety and prompted stricter oversight of building projects. Its impact on how people thought about construction quality lasted for years afterward.

The collapse happened because workers had left the site just ten minutes before - fortunately preventing casualties. Today the location is accessible, and visitors can see the concrete remains without special restrictions.

After the collapse, the site became an unexpected tourist attraction especially around Easter, drawing thousands from southern Finland to see the rubble. The incident later inspired television drama 'Sortuma' by Eero Silvasti, which dramatized the event.
