Pitkäniemen hautausmaa, Historic cemetery in Nokia, Finland
Pitkäniemen hautausmaa is a cemetery in Nokia featuring approximately 37 grave markers arranged mainly along the northern edge of the grounds. The burial site covers a compact area with graves distributed across the property in an organized layout.
The cemetery operated between 1902 and 1964 as the burial ground for roughly 426 patients from the nearby Pitkäniemen hospital. During World War II, the site received additional patients from territories that had been ceded, marking a period of expanded use.
The cemetery served as a burial place for vulnerable patients from the hospital's care, including those without family or under municipal supervision. The location held meaning as a place where people otherwise forgotten were honored in their final rest.
The cemetery is an open area that receives regular maintenance with grass mowing during summer months. Visitors will find the terrain relatively flat and most accessible during warmer seasons when the ground is dry.
During the war years, many patients were buried at night in row graves, a lesser-known aspect of the site's operations. These nighttime burials became necessary to manage the influx of patients arriving from eastern territories.
