Fontenay-sous-Bois, Eastern suburb in Val-de-Marne, France
Fontenay-sous-Bois is a commune in eastern Val-de-Marne, roughly nine kilometers from central Paris. The area covers about 15 square kilometers and sits at an elevation near 90 meters.
The commune took its name in medieval times from the springs that lay in this area. In 1929 it lost part of its territory when Bois de Vincennes was formally separated.
The place name comes from the medieval Latin word fontana meaning spring, pointing to the natural water sources once found here. Residents today live in a mix of neighborhoods and public facilities that shape daily routines.
Connections pass through two main stations: Fontenay-sous-Bois on RER line A and Val de Fontenay with lines A and E. From there you can easily reach different parts of the metropolitan area.
In 2015 the Ukrainian town of Brovary named one of its streets after this French commune. The gesture shows the international ties maintained across long distances.
