Lons-le-Saunier, Prefecture in eastern Jura, France
Lons-le-Saunier is a prefecture town in the eastern Jura department, set between vineyards at the foot of the mountain range. The streets in the center feature arcades from different centuries, beneath which shops and cafés line up.
The salt springs attracted people already in prehistoric times and gave the settlement its name. In the 19th century, thermal baths opened and drew visitors for the salty water.

The train station connects the town to Lyon and Strasbourg through direct lines. The A39 motorway runs north toward Dijon and south into the Swiss Alps.
A museum presents the story of processed cheese and stands on the grounds of the 1921 factory where the Laughing Cow brand was invented. Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle, who composed the French national anthem, was born here and another museum recalls his work.
