Fort of Bregille, Military fortification in Besançon, France.
The Fort of Bregille is a military fortification perched at 446 meters (1,463 feet) elevation on Bregille Hill overlooking the old city of Besançon. The structure features solid stone walls and bastions designed in the style of 19th century defensive architecture.
Construction took place between 1820 and 1832 to replace an older fortification lost to enemy forces in 1814 during the Napoleonic Wars. The new structure reflected updated military strategy to protect the city against future attacks.
The fortification reflects French military engineering practices and forms part of a defensive system encircling the historic old town. This arrangement shows how central the city's protection was to regional strategy.
The surrounding grounds are open to visitors with walking paths offering views over the city, though the interior remains closed for security and operational reasons. The climb to the hilltop requires decent footwear as paths can be uneven.
A World War II anti-aircraft position operated here, marking its final active military role before the site transitioned to new purposes. Today it serves partly as shelter for animals and hosts local authorities.
