Funiculaire de Bregille, Historic funicular railway in Besançon, France
The Funiculaire de Bregille extends 423 meters uphill, connecting the lower section of Besançon to the Bregille hilltop through a steep gradient system.
Built in 1912 to transport visitors to the thermal baths of Besançon-les-Bains, this funicular railway operated continuously until technical issues caused its closure in 1987.
The funicular railway received monument historique inscrit status in 2011, marking its importance in the industrial and transportation heritage of eastern France.
Located at 2B rue du Funiculaire, the railway system includes two stations and features cars designed to carry sixteen seated passengers plus luggage space.
The railway track maintains a maximum gradient of 220 per thousand, demonstrating the engineering capabilities required to overcome the challenging terrain of Besançon.
