Funiculaire de Bregille

The Funiculaire de Bregille is a cable-hauled railway in Besançon that connects the lower part of the city to the Bregille hilltop while climbing an extremely steep slope. The system consists of two stations with cars that can carry passengers and their belongings.

This railway was built in 1912 to bring visitors up to the thermal baths of Besançon-les-Bains located on the hilltop. It operated continuously until technical difficulties forced its closure in 1987.
