Medicis column, Historical column in front of Bourse de Commerce, Paris, France

Description

The Medici Column is a freestanding stone structure with spiral lines running from base to top. The monument features a flat crown with decorative elements and stands in front of the Bourse de Commerce.

History

This structure was commissioned starting in 1575 for a French royal court by an Italian family. Today it remains the only surviving part of a larger palace complex that once occupied this area.

Culture

The column displays Renaissance features visible in its form and proportions. Visitors can observe classical architecture that draws from Italian influences.

Practical

The column can be reached from several metro stations that cross through the business district. The location sits in a busy area with shops and museums nearby.
