Maison Joseph Drouhin, Wine estate in Beaune, France
Maison Joseph Drouhin is a winery in Beaune with vineyards across Burgundy, covering areas such as Chablis, the Côte de Nuits, the Côte de Beaune, and the Côte Chalonnaise. The house produces both red and white wines and operates its cellars beneath the old town of Beaune in a network of medieval vaulted rooms.
The house was founded in 1880 and took over cellars that had previously belonged to the Dukes of Burgundy and the Kings of France. Some of these underground structures go back to Roman times.
The Drouhin name is closely tied to family tradition in Beaune, and visitors on a tour can see how Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are handled using classic Burgundian methods. The vaulted stone cellars give a direct sense of how wine has been aged in this region for centuries.
The cellars are in the heart of Beaune and easy to reach on foot from the town center. Wear sturdy shoes since the tour takes you through narrow passages and up old stone stairs.
The cellars run beneath roughly one hectare of Beaune's historic center, linking several former buildings through a web of medieval passages. Walking through them, you move between rooms from different eras that were connected over the centuries.
