Château de Bouteville, Medieval castle in Bouteville, France
Château de Bouteville is a fortified castle on a hilltop in the Charente region of France with views over vineyards and rolling countryside. The structure combines medieval fortifications with later additions from the Renaissance and 18th century.
The castle was founded around the year 1000, likely built over the remains of a Roman estate from earlier times. It played a role in the region's history during the Middle Ages and was rebuilt several times in later periods.
The castle displays a mix of building styles that reflect how it was used and changed over many centuries. You can see how the rooms and spaces evolved from medieval times through the Renaissance and into later periods.
Access is available from April through November, with guided tours offered for individual visitors and groups. Children under 14 have free entry and can participate in the tours.
The castle was selected in 2018 by Mission Bern as a heritage site at risk requiring preservation efforts. Today it features interactive exhibits and digital displays that bring its thousand-year story to life.
