Musée de la Marine de Loire, History and maritime museum in Châteauneuf-sur-Loire, France
The Musée de la Marine de Loire is a history and maritime museum in Châteauneuf-sur-Loire, in the Loiret department of France. It holds collections of boat models, tools, faïence pieces, and old documents related to river navigation on the Loire.
The museum occupies the former stables of the Château de Châteauneuf-sur-Loire, built at the end of the 17th century and once referred to as a small Versailles. In the 19th century, the surrounding grounds were reshaped into an English-style garden, which visitors can still walk through today.
The Musée de la Marine de Loire is housed in the former stables of a late 17th-century castle, which gives the place a particular feel. Inside, the exhibition shows what daily life looked like for the river workers of the Loire, through everyday objects, old maps, and prints you can look at up close.
The museum is accessible for visitors with reduced mobility, with an elevator, wide walkways, and tactile and audiovisual aids available. Visiting outside the main summer season tends to mean fewer people and more room to move through the galleries at your own pace.
One of the most striking displays is an actual boat hull with a mast and folded sails, set on the paved floor to give the impression of being moored at a Loire quayside. Visitors can also follow a path from the museum garden directly down to the Loire, making the connection to the river feel very real.
