Place de la République

Place de la République is a large rectangular square in central Rennes, bordered by significant buildings including the Commerce Palace. The space is open and spacious, offering room for people to move about and spend time in different areas.

The square was created in 1912 following the covering of a river section to make way for an urban center. This project marked an important moment in Rennes' urban development during the early 20th century.

The square takes its name from a political ideal that gained importance during the French Revolution. Today it serves as an open gathering space where locals and visitors naturally move through and observe the everyday rhythm of the city.

The square is easy to reach, with the République metro station and several bus lines connecting directly here. This makes it a natural transfer point for anyone moving around the city by public transport.

Beneath the square flows a river that was covered decades ago but remains present, supporting the structure of the place. Most visitors do not realize they are walking over a former waterway that once served as a dock for boat traffic.
