Maison des pays de Bresse, Regional museum in Saint-Étienne-du-Bois, France.
Maison des pays de Bresse is an open-air museum spread across a large property with five historic buildings from different periods. Each house was preserved in place or carefully moved here and contains collections that document life in this region.
The buildings date from the 15th to 19th centuries and once faced demolition. They were rescued and reassembled at this location to preserve the region's architectural and historical heritage.
Each building displays aspects of rural life in the Bresse region, from traditional crafts to the clothes people wore in daily life. The exhibitions give you a sense of how the community organized its work and celebrations.
The site is open from early April through late October and requires time to explore all the different buildings. Good walking shoes are recommended since you will cross the entire outdoor grounds.
The Claison farm building holds reconstructed historic shops and an authentically furnished schoolroom from the past. The Montaplan building displays horse-drawn carriages and wagons that were once used for transport.
