Cimetière de l'Est, Historical cemetery in Metz, France
Cimetière de l'Est is a burial ground in Metz that spans 17.5 hectares and features two main gateways built in 1834 and 1864. These entrances connect via walls leading to Avenue de Strasbourg, and the space holds hundreds of monuments from different periods.
This burial ground was established in 1834 following a cholera outbreak that forced the city to seek additional burial space beyond existing cemeteries. The site emerged alongside Bellecroix and Chambière cemeteries to serve the community's growing needs during this health crisis.
The burial ground holds numerous monuments built from local limestone and Jaumont stone, displaying neo-classical and medieval revival styles that reflect the craftsmanship of local stonemasons. These carved works show how the community expressed respect and memory through artistic stone design.
This burial ground is located at 32 rue du Roi Albert in Metz and welcomes visitors throughout the year with seasonal hours adjusted for daylight. Plan to walk through the grounds at a leisurely pace to appreciate the monuments and the scale of the space.
The site gained official protection as a registered historical monument in July 2003, safeguarding approximately 100 notable funerary structures. This designation ensures the long-term preservation of these remarkable stone works for future visitors to discover.
