Château des Hauts de La Chapelle-Saint-Mesmin, Medieval castle in La Chapelle-Saint-Mesmin, France.
Château des Hauts de La Chapelle-Saint-Mesmin is a castle in La Chapelle-Saint-Mesmin sitting on the Loire river in France, defined by two cylindrical towers from the 15th century paired with a broad facade. The structures form a cohesive complex surrounded by terraces that open toward views across the river valley.
King Charles VII ordered the restoration of this former manor house in the 15th century to strengthen it as a defensive structure. Subsequent kings Henry II and Charles IX visited the property during their travels through the Loire region.
Actress Mademoiselle Raucourt lived here from 1801 to 1815, creating a botanical garden containing 463 plant varieties.
The building is now privately owned and can be viewed from the outside, with the grounds offering good orientation for walking around the property. A visit is best planned on clear days to fully appreciate the terrace perspectives and riverside setting.
The castle grounds span twelve hectares and maintain rare plant species exchanged with the gardens of Château de Malmaison.
