Dragon cave of Béraire, Medieval cave in La Chapelle-Saint-Mesmin, France.
The Dragon Cave of Béraire is a medieval cave set into limestone cliffs along the Loire River bank. The interior features natural rock walls with massive round pillars that support the vault, extending about 10 meters deep and 15 meters wide.
This cave dates to the 6th century when Saint Mesmin encountered a dragon within it. The site later became a pilgrimage destination and served as the saint's burial place.
The cave carries a legend that bridges pagan beliefs and Christian faith through its dragon story. Visitors can sense the spiritual importance of the place today in how the space is arranged and used.
Access is via the towpath connected to the GR3 long-distance hiking trail and the Via Turonensis pilgrim route. Visitors should be prepared for damp conditions and uneven rocky ground.
According to legend, the cave was once home to a dragon before becoming a sacred site. This blend of mythical and religious history makes it particularly engaging for visitors to discover.
