La Cloche de Barles, Mountain summit in Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, France
La Cloche de Barles is a mountain massif in the Préalpes de Digne region with two distinct peaks. The Grande Cloche rises to 1887 meters while the Petite Cloche reaches 1909 meters, making it the higher of the two summits.
The mountain area remained difficult to reach until 1854 when a proper road was constructed, replacing the challenging mule paths that had been the only way before. This development opened access to the region and its highlands.
The mountain has played a role in local shepherding traditions, and the Cabane du Jasset hut stands as evidence of how herders used this area in the past.
The climb involves a 900-meter elevation gain across mixed terrain and takes roughly 5 hours for the complete round trip. Good footwear and decent fitness help make the hike manageable.
During spring months, the hillsides display an unusual blend of alpine and Mediterranean plant life, including wild tulips and edelweiss growing at different elevations. This botanical variety makes the route rewarding for those who notice the changing landscape.
