The église Saint-Martial de Champagnat is a church from the 13th century at the center of Champagnat, a small village in France. It has a simple three-bay nave, a rounded apse, and a pointed-arch portal at the entrance.
The church's roots go back to medieval times, when it stood within a fortified village. Traces of defensive structures, probably from the 14th or 15th century, are still visible in the walls.
Inside the church stands a 17th-century wooden Pietà showing the Virgin Mary holding the body of Christ on her lap. What draws the eye is her headdress, a scalloped veil trimmed with lace that reflects the everyday dress of women in the Auvergne region at the time.
The church sits at the center of Champagnat and is easy to find along the village's main roads. Visiting outside of Mass times lets you look around the interior without interruption.
Near the church stands a Neolithic menhir that is listed as a protected historic monument. It shows that people were already living in this area long before the church was built.
