Belvédère du mont des Avaloirs, Observation tower atop Mont des Avaloirs, France
The belvédère du Mont des Avaloirs is an observation tower standing 18.5 meters (60 feet) tall on a hilltop in northwestern France, with a steel framework supporting an open viewing platform. From this height, the structure overlooks the rolling terrain of the Armorican Massif in all directions.
The current tower was built in 1994 and replaces two earlier observation structures that stood on this site since the early 1900s. This long succession of towers demonstrates how visitors have valued this exposed hilltop location across more than a century.
Local artists have decorated the tower's exterior with natural imagery that complements the surrounding highlands. These creative additions give the structure a distinctive presence beyond its role as a viewing platform.
Climbing the tower involves ascending roughly 100 metal stairs to reach the viewing platform at the top. Sturdy footwear is recommended, and visiting during early morning or late afternoon hours usually offers the clearest views across the surrounding landscape.
The location sits at the highest point of the Armorican Massif, making it one of the region's most important topographic landmarks. On clear days, visitors can spot the Mont-Saint-Michel bay in the distance from this summit, giving the place its geographic significance.
