Prehistoric village of Cambous, Prehistoric settlement site in Viols-en-Laval, France.
The archaeological site contains four clusters of stone dwellings, each consisting of eight to ten adjoining cabins with thick stone walls and apse-shaped ends.
Built around 5000 years ago during the Copper Age between 2800 and 2400 BCE, this settlement represents the oldest stone village discovered in France.
The village belongs to the Fontbouisse culture, named after similar archaeological findings near Sommières, characterized by their stone construction techniques and architectural patterns.
The site offers guided tours throughout the year for groups and schools, with adult admission at 4 euros and reduced rates of 2 euros for specific categories.
A reconstructed dwelling at the site perimeter features an authentic thatched and stone-slab roof, demonstrating the prehistoric architectural methods used by early inhabitants.
